Workshop Reviews
I remember the first time I saw a painting of J Louis’. It was called “Electric Disposition” and it caught me off guard. It seemed almost contradictory in nature; the composition was dynamic, the colors bold, the textures manifold, and yet the overall effect was serene, executed with remarkable finesse and intention. The painting seemed at once celebratory (of the feminine) and deeply intimate. I’ve been a fan ever since.
J is an incredible technician, but he’s also an explorer at heart. He’s mastered traditional oil painting techniques to the point where he can now challenge them. He’s constantly exploring new materials, compositions, hues, textures (both physical and visual), and so his work is unique and ever-evolving. He is only comfortable painting beyond his edge -- the type of artist I wanted to learn from.
I knew J was a gifted artist but I wasn’t sure how gifted an instructor he would be. The ability to impart one’s method and technique requires a separate set of skills. I was pleasantly surprised.
The workshop was structured thoughtfully. First, J demonstrated his process from materials to prep work to computer preliminaries to painting. I had the opportunity to ask questions, but I preferred to watch and listen as J explained every mixture, every stroke, and every choice he made until his study was complete.
Then it was my turn to paint. J’s level of attention was like nothing I could have expected. Another instructor might have focused on his own projects, checking on my progress periodically. But for two days, J advised me the entire time. It became obvious that J’s passion for the arts extended far beyond his own work; he was genuinely invested in my improvement and more than happy to share his many years of discovery, from prep to painting to business.
And that’s exactly what J offers: a decade of wisdom condensed into a few days. For any serious artist, I can’t imagine a better value.
- Sam Panarese (sampanarese.com, @sampanarese) 4-day NYC BOOTCAMP

“I would say the overall experience was great. I felt overwhelmed with your use of technology, but you are patient and willing to teach those with tech-phobias. one thing I learned from you was how to truly capture the image. I love your use of color and application. Much lighter than I was accustomed...”
